Reading is a powerful gateway to masses of information. Of all books my favorite are psychology related books, books that are packed with information went unnoticed to the public, books that offer you a new perspective on various matter and books filled with “dangerous” information. Body language is one of them.
Information is like a knife. It is convenient in the kitchen and has lots of uses. It could also be dangerous if you are to misuse it. You can use it to harm or do good for others.
The other day I was wondering the fact that I was giving the pastor more default authority compared to his wife, something is just missing in his wife. In fact, I would be disappointed if I knew this particular week it is going to be his wife instead of him. A sense of clarity just filled me up as I was in my own deep thoughts and internal dialogue last week. No, it was not His presence I felt but I consciously aware of the body languages he is using. Each time he tries to emphasize on message, he does that, that one thing his wife never does. All this while I thought that is his personal style, it could be but he might also use it consciously.
It never struck me that body languages could be that powerful. It is a challenge when you finish those books and realize it is not easy to tailor those body languages to look natural when you are try to apply it and yet, the pastor did it over and over again, so natural so smooth that it went unnoticed to our conscious mind.
Unnatural body language just makes you look weird and it invites conscious resistance. I have not picked that up although I was aware of that information all this while.
How do we apply the knowledge such as body language in life? It has more uses than you think.
One common scenario is during interview. Body languages are our unconscious signals and could possibly portray to others that we are not being honest with our answer. That is it; your future employer might just cross out your name. Of course everyone lied a little here and there during interview. We might be honest about ourselves not being a morning-person; however we were not that truthful when we said we TRY to sleep at 10pm every night.
At that moment, your hand would be tempted to send out those body languages. It happens and you do not realize it. Your body just sells you away. It is nothing to worry about if the person in front of you does not know about body language. What if he knew?
Knowledge of at least a little of what others know is a necessity in today’s competitive world. Knowledge of what others do not might give you a huge advantage. Someone might be saying yes to you but you just knew something is not right. You are unconsciously picking up incongruent signals, mixed signals, and the next thing your gut feeling do not want YOU to trust him.
Could you see the possibility of applying that if you are working in sales line or someone is using that piece of information against you? Did you ever bought something and somehow you regretted your decision?
It could be used in persuasion, to show interest, to make sure your messages get through and to build rapport or default authority. The pastor is not wrong; in fact he did a better job in getting the messages through. His job is to preach those messages.
There will be people uncomfortable with all these ideas. They are shocked at how vulnerable one could be and they try their best to limit the public access to it. They then defend themselves with moral obligations and preach about a loving world. Is this you?
You have the choice of not going to use that new knowledge that you acquire but at least you are aware and able to defend yourself when others try to use it on you. You have no other choice if you do not have that knowledge. You are subject to manipulation.
Do you not think you could help others with the same knowledge next time?
Knife itself has no right or wrong, it is those people who use it. People make noise only when they realize they are subject to manipulation. It does not matter to them if they did not realize it. Those taunt the loudest are the one who are manipulated the worse.
Take a good look at presidential election next time, their body language are specially designed. Look for those repetitive gestures, the one responsible communicating with your unconscious mind. Barack Obama and others get away with it.
When you do know about something, you can choose to be ignorant. You could no longer tell others that you do not know. Now, you do know. The choice is yours.
IF you are still uncomfortable with it, make sure that knowledge is known to every single person on the planet. Everyone would be on equal playground then. Everything would be so fair. How about redistributing all the money on this planet so everyone is equally rich? That is even a fairer playground.
The world is cruel today, it is worse tomorrow. It could be a better day in the future but only heroes live to witness that day.
