This is actually an interesting term. I still remembered when I read about it some years ago, I was stunned for quite some time. For those of you that have no idea what it is, let me try to explain it to you.
Déjà vu is actually a French term that literally means "already seen". Have you ever been to a place or doing something and, a great feeling of familiarity just struck on you? It is like you have seen or done the same thing once and you are doing it again with every exact details being the same but you are very sure that it has never happened. Like you visit a place for the very first time and you have Déjà vu, of course you have never been there.
That is Déjà vu, I remembered I always experienced Déjà vu when I am in primary school. Well, that time I didn’t know there is any scientific explanation to it. I thought it is due to my past life or there is actually a ‘system’ where sometimes our life is repeated just like a pre-recorded tape being play for another time but we are not ‘suppose’ to remember a single thing. Then, sometimes tiny bit of that information just escape from that ‘prison’. That is my own theory when I was small, pretty impressive right. Ha-ha.
So, there are quite a lot of theories about this Déjà vu experience, I will just cover a few that I knew.
Some believe that it is due to the delay of information registering in our brain. It is like there are 2 piece of same information but 1 of them registers directly at the left brain hemispheres. The other piece of information, however, travels a longer pathway that is through right hemispheres and eventually registers itself at the left hemispheres creating a slight delay in 2 pieces of same information reaching the brain at the same time. Thus, we will experience Déjà vu.
On the other hand, some believe that it is due to our past dreams (which we don’t remember most of the dreams we had) or past life experiences.
The first theory I came across that try to explain this wonderful phenomena is that they are just some similarity in our surrounding (sight) or smells etc that resemble 1 of those that we actually experienced before but it is not that prominent until manage to make us realize consciously that it is actually just another piece of memory from our past that are similar to it.
Let me try to explain this better using an example. It is like there is a bakery near your house when you are small and eventually your family moved out that area; there are a few round tables with red chairs in the bakery and of course, the nice smell of freshly baked breads. Then, it so happen that one day, after 20 years perhaps you wanted to buy some breads at 1 of the bakery. As you step into the shop, you experience Déjà vu.
So, the explanation of this theory is that the Déjà vu is probably caused by the red chairs and round table, probably the smell of freshly baked breads or even the similarity in their interior design but you can’t recall that bakery 20 years ago. You thought you knew the place but probably is your mind playing tricks on you.
There are variety of terms describing these types of experience such as Déjà visité (already been to a place - "been there"), Déjà entendu (already heard), Déjà rêvé (already dreamt) and so on.
Déjà vu too can trigger your love experience/ feelings. perhaps your first love always lift his right eye brow when he is teasing you but of course it is a so-common-and-not-important details that get registered in your long term memory without you realizing it. Then, one day, a boy is teasing you and he accidentally lifts his right eye brow, suddenly, you just fall for him. He now carries your first love image sub-consciously and you are once again in love.
